In a globalized world, immigrants have played a fundamental role in the growth and development of diverse societies. Their stories of perseverance, resilience, and success are a testament to the human capacity to adapt to new circumstances and thrive. This is the inspiring story of Denis, a man who arrived in Canada 40 years ago with his family and became a distinguished entrepreneur, facing numerous challenges along the way.
Arriving in Canada was not easy for Denis and his family. One of the biggest obstacles they faced was the language barrier. Without speaking English, they found themselves in an unfamiliar and challenging environment. Yet this did not stop them — they decided to learn the language on their own, supporting each other every step of the way until they were able to communicate and adapt to their new life.
Denis’s first job was selling vacuum cleaners, which required not only sales skills but also resilience in a tough market. Later, he moved on to selling cookbooks — another challenging sales category. Both were considered some of the hardest products to sell, but Denis never gave up and found ways to succeed, building the foundation of his business mindset.
His passion for business was evident from a young age. As a child, he would buy items and sell them for a profit, a natural entrepreneurial instinct that eventually led him into the Canadian business world. He worked across several companies, gaining valuable knowledge in different industries before founding his own family business.
Grupo Horizonte, the company Denis founded with his family, has been a cornerstone of the Latin American community in Western Canada for 33 years. They were pioneers in introducing Latin American food to the region. Today, Horizonte carries more than 800 products imported from Mexico, Central America, and a curated selection from South American countries. They also produce corn tortillas under the renowned “Doña Elsita” brand — a craft Denis considers an art form.
Grupo Horizonte stands out not only for its wide range of exotic products — from Mexican chapulines (edible grasshoppers) to Argentine mate, Colombian fruit pulps, and the essential Harina Pan corn flour used in Colombia and Venezuela — but also for its ability to enter and conquer the Canadian market. Teaching Canadian consumers to explore and appreciate these flavors was a major challenge, but through dedication and hard work, Denis and his team have succeeded in making Canadians recognize the quality and diversity of Latin American products.
Beyond sales success, Grupo Horizonte is also a source of employment for many families. Denis, as general manager and lead buyer, is proud of the impact his company has had on the Canadian community. Working over 12 hours a day and having done every role himself — from cleaning to contracts and business negotiations — he knows every part of his company’s operations, allowing him to make the best decisions for the future. His story is living proof that dreams and hard work can open doors and create lasting impact.
