Electronic recycling is becoming increasingly important across Latin American countries and here in Canada. The process involves dismantling electronic devices, separating their components, responsibly recycling what can no longer be used, and repairing what technicians know can still work. It is a practice that benefits the environment, since electronic waste continues to contaminate our planet at alarming rates.
This is where Juan David Farfán comes in. Originally from Colombia and a Canadian resident for 23 years, Juan David — like many immigrants — has reinvented himself. After a career in Canadian aviation, he decided to pivot under the motto of “second chances” and dedicated himself to phone repair, a skill he had learned across several Latin American countries.
His curiosity became his greatest strength. Noticing the huge amount of electronic waste being written off and how little of it was being effectively reused — Canada has few specialized phone and computer repair technicians — Juan David spotted a real opportunity. As he puts it: “Latinos are curious by nature and always try to solve problems.”
The idea grew from a small space where Juan David worked alone, repairing phones and slowly learning the industry ecosystem. Today, Latino Systèmes has 4 stores, 19 employees, a clear ecological mission, and a thriving business model. Juan David takes what many consider trash and transforms it into raw material for others — nearly 90% of the electronic waste they receive is restored to working condition and often sent to South America, where it continues to have value.
Beyond repair and recycling, Latino Systèmes focuses on solving practical problems that new immigrants face, such as setting up a Canadian phone line, adapting phones to new networks, and sending/receiving money and packages — all with quality, trust, and affordability. The staff speaks French, English, and Spanish, making it easy for newcomers to access everything in one place without language barriers.
Juan David Farfán and Latino Systèmes are a powerful example of the creativity and strength of the Latin community — always ready to improve their own situation and that of others. His message to the community, and especially to young people, is clear: curiosity and innovation can drive real change, including for the care of our planet.
