Víctor Manuel Treviño took office as Mexico’s Consul General in Montreal on March 22, 2024, marking a new chapter in his extensive diplomatic career. With more than 40 years of service to his country, Treviño has defended the interests of Mexicans abroad, having previously served as ambassador to Ethiopia and consul in several key cities across the United States.
His experience and commitment to protecting the rights of Mexican nationals, combined with a renewed focus on international cooperation, have established him as a leader who promotes culture, strengthens commercial ties, and places particular emphasis on defending the labor rights of Mexican workers — especially in Quebec and Canada’s Atlantic coast.
The year 2024 has been marked by several significant events under Treviño’s leadership, placing Mexican culture at the heart of Montreal’s social life. One of the most notable milestones was the graduation ceremony of the Mexicana Emprende program, which recognizes Mexican women entrepreneurs in Montreal. Since its launch in 2022, the program has supported numerous women in Quebec and the Atlantic provinces through training and mentorship.
Another key moment was the celebration of Mexican Independence Day, which brought together the Mexican community and Canadian friends in a festival filled with music and gastronomy. This celebration, commemorating September 16, strengthened Mexican identity abroad and reinforced bonds of friendship between Mexico and Canada.
The 2024 Day of the Dead stood out as a monumental event, organized in collaboration with the Montreal Arts Council. This year’s commemorative altar was dedicated to Mexican architect Luis Barragán, one of the great figures of modern architecture. Created with the support of Universidad Anáhuac, Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM), and Université Laval in Quebec, the offering included scale models of Barragán’s iconic works alongside traditional Day of the Dead elements such as cempasúchil flowers, candles, papel picado, and skulls.
